Special “God in China” programming event on VisionTV looks at the spiritual life of an emerging global powerhouse

With the Beijing Olympic Games set to begin on August 8, world attention is focused now on China as never before.

Much has been written about the country’s emergence as an economic powerhouse, and about the growing tension between an authoritarian regime and a new generation that craves Western-style freedoms.

But what of religion? What do China’s citizens believe in? What part does spiritual faith play in the lives of a people experiencing massive economic and cultural upheaval?

Beginning on Monday, July 21 - Friday, July 25, VisionTV presents “God in China,” a week-long programming event that investigates these very questions. The multi-faith and multicultural broadcaster offers a series of documentaries that examine China’s past and present, and shed light upon the spiritual lives of its people.Highlights will include the Canadian television premiere of the two-part documentary China’s Leap of Faith (airing July 22 and 23), an in-depth account of the country’s 21st century religious revival.

God in China Week

Other documentary presentations will consider the history of Confucianism, the Dalai Lama’s campaign against Chinese rule in Tibet, and the human cost of economic reform.

China in the Red
9 pm & 12 am ET / 6 pm & 9 pm PT

China in the RedA decade ago, the government of China introduced some of the most drastic economic reforms the country had ever seen. The resulting upheaval left millions of Chinese facing an uncertain future. Some would prosper, while others would experience joblessness and destitution. This two-hour documentary, produced for the PBS series Frontline, follows a handful of ordinary Chinese citizens – factory workers, rural villagers and entrepreneurs – over a period of three years as they struggle to adapt to the country’s economic modernization. Their personal stories shed light on the human cost of China’s rush to embrace the global free market, and reveal the face of a China rarely seen in the West: a nation in the process of radically redefining itself.

10 pm & 1 am ET / 7 pm & 10 pm PT

God in China: The Struggle for Religious FreedomWhile China’s leadership has shown a willingness to abandon, gradually, its anti-religious bias, this freedom has its limits. The regime still tries to micromanage religion. Citizens who shun state-sanctioned religious institutions in favour of “underground” churches do so at great personal risk. How the government deals with God in China will reveal whether the country is finally ready for democracy. In this hour-long documentary, produced for Italy’s RomeReports News Agency, Chinese men and women speak candidly of their experiences as religious believers, and their assessment of what the future may hold for them. The film presents interviews with representatives of both official and underground religions, shows priests and seminarians practicing their faith in secret, and offers a rare glimpse into China’s Muslim community.
